So now when you have a run flat damage you also have a bent or cracked rim. I have talked to other people with run flats in the BMW community, they all have the same story, damaged tire had to be replaced AND damaged wheels? I asked myself, how many times, in my entire life have I jacked up my car and used a spare tire? 0 times in over 2 decades of driving and I was on the road A lot usually more than 50k miles a year. So all of that fear of oh no, you have to have run flats, because you don't have a spare. Never had a blow out, never been stranded on the side of the road due to a tire blowout. In the previous million miles I have hit pot holes, run over boards on the highway, and all kinds of things. Though I have had 2 blow outs and the blow outs make me think, thank goodness I had run flats because I could drive to the dealership. Never had run flat tires until the past 60,000 miles. over 1 million miles of driving in different states over a couple of decades. Yes, I have been looking into this, and in my belief the story of the runflat tire is a self fulfilling prophecy. So, imho, the real questions are: 1) whether you're prepared to be equipped with a spare and tools and/or roadside assistance or not 2) if you are willing to pay for the convenience of run flats 3) if the difference in the feel of the ride matters to you and perhaps most importantly 4) which path is more cost effective based on your personal driving history/conditions. The up front cost is the primary difference, and if you switch to regulars, you'll be buying all 4 tires. So whether it's a regular tire or run flat, you can mitigate the majority or all of the cost of a replacement or repair. That said, just a thought - a number of people make points about the costs of run flats and patching/replacement.but if you go with a place like TireRack, you'll get the replacement warranty whether a pothole destroys it or you get a nail, and run flats can be safely patched depending on how they are punctured. If you have regular tires, you'll have the up front cost/space of a spare or 5th tire/wheel and maybe a tow, but overall tire cost will probably be half as expensive. A slow leak you might not even notice for days or weeks. Run flats will cost more, but you can usually get yourself to a repair shop, and you don't need a spare.
